Last year, my boyfriend and I had enough of the harsh Canadian winters and decided to escape to warmer weather. We knew we wanted to spend the winter in Mexico, and our search for the perfect destination ended when we discovered San Miguel de Allende, or SMA, as it’s commonly called. We booked our flights from Calgary to Puerto Vallarta. We spend two days there to soak up the sun. Then travelled from PV to Leon and took a private car to SMA. Did I mentioned that we took our two little dogs with us? oh yes we did! We spent five incredible months there, meeting wonderful people, including many fellow expats. Simply put, we fell in love with San Miguel.
Hey there, friends! If you and your partner are craving a romantic getaway that combines charm, adventure, and a sprinkle of magic, let me introduce you to San Miguel de Allende. On July 8, 2008, San Miguel de Allende was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Trust me, this place is like stepping into a fairy tale with its cobblestone streets and jaw-dropping sunsets. It’s the kind of place where history meets art, where every corner is filled with boutique shops, amazing restaurants, and live music spilling out of cozy bars. San Miguel de Allende is nestled in the central highlands of Mexico, in the state of Guanajuato.
Getting to San Miguel de Allende is pretty easy, and you have two main airport options. The closest one is Guanajuato International Airport (BJX) in León, about 1.5 hours away by car. The other option is Mexico City International Airport (MEX), which is about a 3.5 to 4-hour drive. If you fly into León, you can grab a shuttle, private car, or rental for a smooth ride to San Miguel. From Mexico City, you can either take a direct bus (which is super comfortable) or hire a private transfer for a hassle-free trip. Either way, the journey is scenic, and once you arrive, you’ll see why it was totally worth it!
San Miguel is often described as having eternal spring weather because of its mild, temperate climate year-round. Sitting at an elevation of about 6,200 feet (1,900 meters) in central Mexico, the town enjoys warm, sunny days and cool evenings, much like springtime no matter the season. The best time to visit San Miguel de Allende is between November and April when the weather is pleasantly warm during the day and cool in the evenings. These months offer plenty of sunshine, making it perfect for exploring the city’s colourful streets, art galleries, and outdoor cafés.
